Is Your TDCi Turbo Failing?

If you’re driving a Ford 1.5 or 1.6 TDCi and noticing:

  • Loss of power

  • Oil feed & return inspection
  • Intercooler contamination checks
  • Correct priming procedure
  • First start safety checks

What Causes TDCi Turbo Failure?

These engines are strong — but the turbo system is sensitive.

1️⃣ Oil Starvation (Most Common Cause)

The turbo relies entirely on clean, high-pressure oil. If the oil feed pipe blocks or sludge builds up, the turbo bearings fail quickly.

Common causes:

  • Missed oil changes
  • Incorrect oil grade
  • Carbon build-up in oil feed
  • Contaminated oil

2️⃣ Blocked Oil Feed Pipe

On many Ford TDCi engines, the oil feed pipe must be replaced with the turbo.

Reusing the old pipe is one of the biggest reasons new turbos fail within weeks.

3️⃣ Intercooler Oil Contamination

When a turbo fails, oil often fills the intercooler and boost pipes.

If this isn’t cleaned properly:

  • The new turbo can ingest oil
  • Engine runaway risk increases
  • Performance issues remain

Proper Turbo Replacement Procedure

If you’re replacing a TDCi turbo, you must:

✔ Replace oil feed pipe

✔ Replace oil return gasket

✔ Change oil & filter

✔ Flush intercooler

✔ Check DPF condition

✔ Prime turbo before first start

Skipping these steps is why so many replacement turbos fail.

Final Advice

If your turbo has failed, don’t just replace the unit.

Diagnose the cause.

Most repeat failures are preventable — and usually come down to oil system contamination.

Fix the root cause once, and it’ll last.

Skoda 1.6 tdi timing tensioner failure Part one

This week was interesting. Having replaced this belt a couple of years ago on a Skoda Octavia 1.6 Diesel, the customer came in with a terrible noise. So it was time to investigate. As you can see from the pictures upon stripping it down I was horrified by what I saw. As you can clearly see the bearing as totally failed. It was surprising to know this car was actually running. Totally amazed that it was running.  You can see that the heat from the faulty bearing has over heated melting the plastic on the tensioner. Here you can see it after removal. The obvious thing to do now was replace the timing belt kit using the correct Volkswagen  locking tools to see how it runs. OK so I will put you out of suspense. The car runs but makes a terrible noise. So unfortunately for the customer the Skoda will be stripped for further investigation. I have no doubt there will be internal damage but I expected this anyway.  I will follow up with thi...
