The Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine is used in many Ford models including the Fiesta, Focus, Puma, B-Max, C-Max and more. While these engines are efficient and powerful for their size, they are also known for a serious oil system problem that can lead to engine failure.
One of the most common warnings owners see is the low oil pressure warning light.
If this happens, the engine should be stopped immediately, because continuing to drive can cause severe engine damage in a very short time.
The Common Cause
On the 1.0 EcoBoost engine, the oil pump is driven by a belt inside the engine.
This is often referred to as the oil pump belt or part of the wet belt system, because the belt runs inside the engine and operates in oil.
Over time this belt can:
- Degrade in the engine oil
- Shed material into the oil system
- Lose tension or fail completely
When this happens the oil pump cannot maintain proper oil pressure, which can trigger the low oil pressure warning light.
In severe cases this can lead to:
- Oil starvation
- Engine bearing damage
- Complete engine failure
Symptoms to Watch For
Some of the common symptoms include:
- Low oil pressure warning light
- Engine warning messages
- Unusual engine noise
- Poor lubrication inside the engine
- Oil contamination from belt material
If these symptoms appear, the vehicle should be checked immediately.
