Vauxhall Corsa D, no brakes on near side front. Problem diagnose and solution

Vauxhall’s corsa D model has a common fault with the brakes not working on the left front. This may not be a easy fix. But there is a likely cause. But before we go to common fault we need to be sure it’s not any of the obvious things.

Firstly check the sliders on the Caliper carrier and make sure the pads are free to move in the carrier. Doing this obviously eliminates these and could potentially be the cause in normal circumstances.

Next, see if the piston on the caliper pushers back easily. If you find this difficult you will think you have found the problem. Seized caliper? Maybe! I’m guessing not!

To eliminate the caliper and brake flexible hose being blocked temporarily refit the caliper and loosen the Union where the flexible hose goes to steel brake pipe. Now press foot brake and see if any brake fluid comes out. If it doesn’t you can guarantee the fault is further away from the caliper.

I have found the next thing in line to the master cylinder is the abs module. This is where the common fault is. You can confirm this by loosening the feed pipe into the abs module and pressing foot brake again. You will most likely find there to be plenty of fluid escaping.

Now you have found the fault you have a few options.

  1. You could replace with a second hand unit from a vehicle breaker. Probably the cheapest but no guarantee. So may need replacement again in the future.
  2. Buy new from a vauxhall dealership. This option is very expensive but will be guaranteed for 12 months
  3. Have the corsa D Abs pump unit repaired by a reputable repairer. Many of the give a lifetime guarantee at a fraction of the price of a new one from vauxhall
My personal opinion would be option three. You can fit and forget with peace of mind it won’t fail again. If it does you can simply return to the repairer.

Cheap tools or expensive premium tools?

OK so I get the argument. I got the best tools snap on, Mac tools with lifetime guarantee! The other guy are your mate says. Look at these tools I just bought really cheap, why pay the price you paid when you can have them for a fraction of the price. In my experience after 25 years in the motor trade I have come to a conclusion. But before I reveal my conclusion I have to say at the start of my time as a mechanic I was snap on tools all the way. Unfortunately now after paying a stupid amount for tools it doesn’t matter. What good is a tool you Left on the bulkhead costing £60 or a tool that cost you £6. I know the answer. It’s no good. But a £6 it’s easily replaceable. What’s more is that in my time in the trade I have found the quality to be almost as good as premium tools. Not to say it’s the same. To conclude if you are totally obsessed with your tools and you put them away after every use definitely consider the premium tool. But if you’re the busy mechanic or enthusiast I w...
