Does my car need servicing?

Sounds like a stupid question but really how many people don't get there car serviced?  A friend of mine likes a joke now and again. He's the one with the attitude of. Not servicing my car, what a waste of money. We all know someone like this. So tried to reason with him about the benefits and savings in the long run it would make. He told me "yes whatever!"
A few weeks passed, had a few drinks and he quizzed me. And asked what can I do to increase performance on my car. I had to laugh. "What you laughing at?" He didn't like my answer. I replied “ why not get it serviced?”
Then I had him hear me out, explaining the following

  • New oil and filter, the like blood of the engine obviously. Modern engines are designed to use small amounts of oil. Long term could result in no oil in the engine this in turn could cause irreparable engine damage with a very expensive repair bill.
  • Air filter. The engine can breath much better increasing performance and economy. Can you imagine the state of a filter that's not been changed for 50k for example?
  • Replaced fuel filter. Fresh clean fuel for the engine. Better flow of fuel and less bad deposits clogging/damaging very sensitive components like fuel injectors pumps and fuel lines.
  • Brakes/suspension goes without saying. Paramount safety. But a sticking or binding brakes is going to seriously affect economy and performance.
  • Tyre pressures. Not only will this affect economy a slightly deflated tyre can cause reduced handling at high speeds, also reduced breaking efficiency. Incorrect tyre pressures will also give uneven tyre wear causing scrubbing to edges of tyres. Increasing motoring costs and reduced fuel economy.

After all this funnily enough he had car serviced and has not looked back. " cars never run so good since.” One happy customer.

So, to conclude the answer to the above question is yes. It’s obviously an additional cost but will save you in the long run and probably more importantly keep you, your family and others safe

Skoda 1.6 tdi timing tensioner failure Part one

This week was interesting. Having replaced this belt a couple of years ago on a Skoda Octavia 1.6 Diesel, the customer came in with a terrible noise. So it was time to investigate. As you can see from the pictures upon stripping it down I was horrified by what I saw. As you can clearly see the bearing as totally failed. It was surprising to know this car was actually running. Totally amazed that it was running.  You can see that the heat from the faulty bearing has over heated melting the plastic on the tensioner. Here you can see it after removal. The obvious thing to do now was replace the timing belt kit using the correct Volkswagen  locking tools to see how it runs. OK so I will put you out of suspense. The car runs but makes a terrible noise. So unfortunately for the customer the Skoda will be stripped for further investigation. I have no doubt there will be internal damage but I expected this anyway.  I will follow up with thi...
